Shephard receives Franklin B. Walter Award

All-Scholastic Award presented at OESCA banquet

COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 19, 2017) – Leah Shephard, of West Portsmouth,
received the Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award during the 28
th Annual Awards
Ceremony hosted by the Ohio Educational Service Center Association (OESCA) on
April 12, in Columbus.

The Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award was established in 1989 by Ohio’s
County Superintendents to recognize outstanding student achievement.
One student from each of Ohio’s 88 counties is chosen to receive this
annual honor. The award is named for Dr. Franklin B. Walter, who served
as State Superintendent from 1977 until 1991. During his tenure, Dr. Walter
worked with three governors and significantly improved education in Ohio.
He received numerous honors and earned the respect and admiration
of educators nationwide.

Shephard, a senior at Valley High School in Scioto County, has a 4.0 GPA and
is a member of the National Honor Society. She also participates in her school
chorus, prom committee, pep club, quiz bowl, science bowl, student council,
and more.  She has been accepted to attend Transylvania University, and plans
to attend medical school.

Paolo DeMaria, state superintendent of public instruction, was the guest speaker
at the ceremony, and awards were presented by Craig Burford of OESCA, Kerri
Gearhart of Northwest Ohio ESC, William Koran of Medina County ESC, Sandra
Frisch of Lake Erie West ESC, and Rick Edwards of Athens-Meigs ESC.

Quiz Bowl
           
                                      
The VHS Quiz Bowl Team finished in 5th place at the County
Tournament at Shawnee State University on March 9, 2017.
The team finished the season in 5th place out of 14 teams with
a final record of 11-6.

Congratulations to the Quiz Bowl Team, and Mr. Howard for finishing with a solid record this year!

Science Bowl

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) South Central Ohio Regional Science Bowl was hosted by Shawnee State University at Vern Riffe Center for the Arts on March 10, 2017. There was a total of 32 teams in the competition which included two teams from VHS - Team 1 of seniors and Team 2 of underclassmen.  Team 1 got to play on the big stage, and received semifinalist medals for making the final four.  Team 2 made the final eight.

Congratulations to both VHS teams and Mr. McClay for competing hard, and making a strong run in the Science Bowl!

Summer Camp at Otterbein University



The 2017 Martin W. Essex School for the Gifted and Talented™ at Otterbein University offers rising high school juniors and seniors opportunities for career exploration through a unique program comprised of classes, seminars and workshops on the arts, sciences and humanities. Taking place in multiple venues throughout Otterbein’s campus, this residential program encourages social interaction and peer discussion so that students can be challenged intellectually and artistically and develop a better understanding of the role of their abilities and talents in their lives and in society.

OMUN

Ohio Model United Nations is a three-day global education simulation
experience that allows students in grades 6-12 to learn about the
complete operations of the United Nations and its role as the world’s
largest international peacekeeping and humanitarian organization.
Through the process of role-playing, students become delegates
of a selected nation in order to write, present and debate issues
affecting the nations and peoples of the world. Additionally, students
present culturally based talent, participate in global education
contests and debate current issues from the agenda of the United Nations.

Ohio Model United Nations provides students an opportunity to:

  • Learn about cultures, governments and peoples of nations
    throughout the world.
  • Use research skills, writing skills and written & oral
    communications skills.
  • Develop critical thinking skills, problem solving skills
    and evaluative skills.
  • Debate current global issues and world problems.
  • Practice and use leadership skills in a real life global simulation.
  • Understand the need for peace and conflict resolution
    throughout the world.

Valley High School students participated in OMUN on November 27th-29th

held at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Columbus, Ohio.  The students worked
together in groups to prepare and present their nation's issues to hundreds
of students in general assembly for debate and resolution.  We want to recognize and congratulate each student on a job well done at 2016 OMUN.

2016 Wendy's High School Heisman Winners
Wendy's High School Heisman is awarded to high-achieving seniors who participate in a wide range of sports, excel in the classroom, and contribute in their communities with service and leadership.  One boy student and one girl student is selected as winners in each school by Wendy's High School Heisman program.  Seniors, Nathan Riehl and Bre Gahm, were selected for this honorable award, and were recognized on November 15th along with other area school winners.

Congress of Future Medical Leaders
Congress of Future Medical Leaders is an academic honors program for students planning on entering the medical field as physicians or scientists. Leen Heresh attended the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston, Massachusetts in summer of 2015.  She nominated Leah Shephard to attend in 2016.  In June, Leah attended the program at University of Massachusetts in Lowell, Massachusetts.
